Whether you are renovating, or feel frustrated at ugly rust spots and chipped enamel in the bath or shower, ask us to source an experienced and specialist re-surfacer to suit your needs. Before you re-surface a bath or shower, you must clear the area and wipe it dry. If it is a leaking tap adding to the problem, get this fixed first or use the re-surfacer specialist’s plumber.  Either way, the area to be re-surfaced must be dry.

SELECTION CHECKLIST
Getting an appraisal and quotes before any re-surfacing will ensure you get the right waterproofing suggestions for the affected area.  Then you can be sure the re-surfacing will be effective and any additional costs prevented. (See our Bathroom Equipment and Accessories and Wall and Floor Tiles sections.) Some trade specialists will re-surface as well as replace bath surround and shower floor tiles.  Others will have their own plumber  and include any plumbing in their quote. You must make sure that the proper damp base exists already installed in the area and the area itself is sealed in your bathroom, or en-suite, laundry or wet area to be re-surfaced. You can save money by getting your own plumber to get such a job done in advance.   For the right trades contacts, see our Repairs and Maintenance section.

TYPES AVAILABLE
Only porcelain or enamelled baths and basins can be re-surfaced. Check whether your bath or basin is made of the right material.  Most contemporary stand-alone showers start with a shower tray so you can check on the wear and tear of this also.  You can get just the shower tray repaired and replaced.  (See Other Points for Consideration below). Some re-surface specialists will top up grouting. Check on this before you go ahead with a quote.

Some antique porcelain baths can be restored and sometimes replacing the bath or basin, or both, can be the simplest solution. (See our Bathroom Equipment and Accessories section).  Some heritage bath feet also can be re-surfaced, or matched with replacements.

AVAILABLE MATERIALS AND FINISHES
Silicone sealants and finishes. New colour schemes enhanced by a colour-complementary bath and basin re-surface.

Chemical cleaning ahead of re-surfacing. Some re-surfacers will offer to analyse an overall wet area problem when quoting. Some re-surface specialists offer warranties and guarantees. Anti-slip finishes can be included in a re-surfacing project. Stained grouting can be renewed.

OTHER POINTS FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION
Re-surfacing of any enamelled or tiled bath, basin or shower does not mean re-tiling. See our Bathroom Equipment and Accessories and Wall and Floor Tiles sections for any tile rounds. Make sure all wall and floor joins are sealed if any re-tiling is called for. If you have a leak problem in the wet area containing the bath, basin or shower for re-surfacing, you can try to figure out whether it is caused by a faulty or worn out tap washer or tap stem, or it is coming from the main water pipe. Then you can check on whether the existing sealing material in the wet area’s wall and floor joins is watertight or not.  Then ask us for the right tradesperson.  Ask the tradesperson how long to allow for your re-surfacing project and whether it is  done on-site.  Depending on the project, allow a time ranging from overnight to one  week. Some re-surfacing specialists will suggest that a rusted or damaged drain cover be replaced, thereby saving on calling in a plumber.   Check with us first.
