Question: I have hung wood windows which are drafty. My home is an old beauty. I am thinking of getting these windows replaced with new high performance windows. But I wish to retain the grand appearance of my old home. Can you suggest a window replacement alternative for me? Some time ago I changed the window ropes. Will I be able to install these by myself?

Answer: You are lucky to have a variety of wood products with high performance features. And you can yourself install many of them. All you need is a slight persistence and several standard hand tools. I have successfully installed these products in hundreds.

You will not have to compromise the architectural integrity and splendor of your home at all. You will not impair the exterior and interior trim around your windows at all. In most cases, you will have to get rid of only the actual windows as well as the fine parting strip in-between each sash.

Replacement kits are offered by many manufacturers for your window openings which are custom made to these window openings. You will take hardly an hour to complete the installation of these products provided that you have a square opening and your measurements are perfect.

All the options that you will find normally in new windows are available in these replacement window kits in most of the cases. The options include different wood species, glass options, bare or primed wood, authentic divided lites and aluminum clad. Different options can in fact be ordered for top and bottom sash. For instance, the lower sash is a clear window and the top sash is a two pane divided lite window in older homes. In almost all cases, you will be able to duplicate the existing sashes.

It is quite easy to install these products. Most of the work can be accomplished from within your home. You say that you had earlier successfully been able to replace broken sash cords. This should then not at all be difficult for you. The sash stop moldings hold the bottom sash in its track. You should remove the sash stop moldings. Take out the sashes and the parting strip. Cut the sash cords. Take out the metal pulleys. Now you are ready for the enjoyable part.

There are metal clips to hold the new side jambs in place in most kits. The metal weights and old sash cords are replaced by these vinyl jambs. A snug fit is assured by these jambs. This will a make sure that there are no more the troublesome drafts. Snap the new jamb liners in when the clips are in place. You can now install the windows. A small piece of weather-stripping is required to be installed near the top sash.Paint and stain the windows before they are installed. This will make sure that the job goes off well. Keep the old sashes with you. They can be sold to salvage companies. The salvation companies sell these old sashes to people who want old glass for the purpose of historic restoration or need replacement sashes.
